More than just skiing

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

THANKSGIVING WEEKEND is the traditional beginning of events at the ski resorts, but there’s more to do around Thanksgiving at the Lake. On the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving Christ Botti and Boney James are performing just a lovely lakeshore drive away from us at the Holiday Jazz Fest in Incline Village’s Hyatt Regency.

The FIRST WEEKEND OF DECEMBER brings with it the South Shore’s first Festival of Trees and Lights sponsored by the Barton Foundation and held at MontBleu with 3 days of stage performances and holiday events including Polar Express rides through town, Teddy Bear Breakfasts, a Dessert Buffet and a Concert with the Bay Area’s noted party band, the Cheeseballs. You can learn more about the specifics of this event debut at www.festivaloftreeslaketahoe.com.

ARRANGING A STAY with us is easy. You can book a room at the Stardust online or book a room at the Americana online.  If online booking isn’t your thing, no problem, give Linda at the Stardust a call at 800-262-5077 OR Sara at the Americana at 800.822.5920.  Give us a call… we’d love to share the Spirit of the Holidays with you.

Happy Travels,

The six seasons of Tahoe

Bears at Taylor Creek

I find the changing of the season here in Lake Tahoe quite wondrous. Born and raised in Southern California I have never really experience “seasons”. They were just something we heard about down there. This will be my third winter, so am hardly an expert but it seems to me we really have six seasons up here in the mountains.

The year starts off with the winter white wonderland, everything blanketed in white. The contrasts off the deep blues in the sky and lake are incredible.

Spring can’t really come into its full glory until the days are warm enough for the snow to melt, this can be much later in the year than many other places. Once it does, the greens are so vivid, the flowers begin popping up everywhere. The spring bulb display here at the Stardust is amazing.

Summer can also take its time getting here, but when it does, what fun! Longer days and warmer nights mean fun in the sun at the beach and songs by campfire.  Don’t forget the stars!

Fall can be quite variable, for winter can come early, or summer can hang around much later. However no matter what the weather is doing, the Salmon always make their run in October, the color changes usually will too. The bears stocking up for winter at Taylor Creek are not to be missed.

I would add “early spring” and “late fall” to the traditional four, for they are distinctly different. Early Spring can be mid March to Mid May and everything is still in transition. It is not as pretty in some respects, but still rather amazing as you see what an enormous cycle our plants and wildlife go through. Daffodils and Crocus popping out through the last bits of snow are just not something you get to see in most areas of California.

We are just starting the season I call ” Late Fall”. The colors have made their run, and are fading away in the higher altitudes. They are still quite glorious on the drive up Hwy 50, however. The animals are very busy, making their last efforts to stock up for what they know is ahead. The air is crisp and cool, but the days have been bright and beautiful. It is still quite nice out for hiking, and biking.

Come and enjoy the seasons with us, or think about a quick weekend getaway and see if I am right about “Late Fall”.

Hope to see you soon!

For Paralympian, no limits defines life

When Paralympian Mark Wellman, 49, answers his phone in Truckee, he picks it up with two short words: “No Limits.”

That’s the name of the motivational business he started in 1991, but also a brief summation on his attitude on living.

“It’s kind of a catchy name to me,” he said. “At the time, there weren’t many other people around using it. I wanted a phrase that kind of tells what I’m all about. I’ve tried to get out and do a lot of adventures over the years that no one has ever done before in my situation.”

Thanksgiving in Tahoe

Saturday, November 7th, 2009
This could be you!

This could be you!

I have spent many Thanksgivings in Tahoe and every year the same question is on every one’s mind; will there be snow and will the ski resorts be open.  Heavenly is scheduled to open Friday November 20!  That’s great news for anyone looking to ski this Thanksgiving.  What could be better than a holiday feast and a day or two on the slopes?  Personally, I can’t think of anything.

For anyone wanting to ski the Stardust is right across the street from the Heavenly Gondola!  Seriously, all you have to do is grab your complimentary coffee and donut, walk out the door, cross the street, and jump on the first Heavenly Gondola ride of the season!  It’s that convenient.  Book a room at the Stardust and ski your heart out on opening day!

Ok, so maybe you want to ski but being right in the heart of the action isn’t your thing.  If this sounds like you then the Americana is probably more your pace.  It’s the sister resort to the Stardust but it’s off the main strip by a couple of blocks.  From the Americana you can easily walk to the Gondola, catch the shuttle bus a few feet away from your door, or take about a mile drive up Ski Run Blvd. to the base of Heavenly Ski Resort.  Book a room at the Americana and leave the hussle behind at the end of the day.

See you on Thanksgiving!
